Mind and World in Early Modern Philosophy (Graduate Course)

Call for papers: a conference on philosophy of education

Deadline for proposals 30.11.2025, conference 11.-12.6.2026 @ University of Oulu

In June 2026, the University of Oulu will host an international conference focusing on philosophy of education, with the additional themes of dialogue and democracy. Doctoral students can participate free of charge, and you can apply to the conference with either an abstract or a full-length article. We hope to receive a wide range of topics related to the themes, so philosophical works related to democratic theory or political deliberation, for example, are welcome, even if they do not have a strong educational angle. The keynote speakers include multiple leading researchers of the field, and the organizing committee includes researchers from the universities of Oulu, Tampere, and Turku, so we expect the event to bring together researchers from across Finland and abroad.

Below is the official invitation, which includes a link to the conference website:

Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the Deliberate Research Project and the Demoed Research Group, we are delighted to invite you to the Dialogue in Democratic Education conference, taking place in Oulu on 11–12 June 2026. Please visit the Dialogue in Democratic Education conference website for further information.

We warmly encourage you to submit abstracts and full papers by 30 November 2025. Comprehensive submission guidelines will be made available on the conference website by 15 October 2025.

We look forward to seeing you in Oulu!

With warmest regards,

The Organising Committee,

Katariina Holma, Hanna-Maija Huhtala, Anniina Leiviskä, Jan Löfsröm, Tuukka Tomperi

Contemporary themes in Social Epistemology, 9.6.–12.6.2025, Tampere University.

by Dr. T.Y. Branch (Hannover)

Description:

The development and acquisition of knowledge is fundamentally a social endeavor. Knowledge emerges from the contributions of diverse individuals and communities, shaped by a variety of practices and aimed at multiple objectives. However, the modalities of information exchange have undergone significant transformations in terms of medium, volume, and content. This course offers a contemporary examination of critical issues related to the dynamics of information sharing, analyzed through the lens of social epistemology. We will explore questions surrounding who shares information, how it is disseminated, and what types of information are prioritized. Key topics will include the challenges of communicating specific information about pressing issues such as climate change, the implications of artificial intelligence, and the role of communicators as knowledge brokers. We will also connect these contemporary concerns to established themes in social epistemology, such as trust in experts and the nature of uncertainty. In addition to engaging with these emerging topics, students will participate in activities and writing exercises designed to deepen their understanding and interest in the current state of social epistemology.
