First Call for Papers
FINSSE-9: The Opportunities and Challenges of Interdisciplinarity
15–16 August 2019, Tampere University, Finland
The concept of interdisciplinarity has gained prominence since the early 1970s, when it started to be used as a tool to solve the problem of how knowledge can be unified. Interdisciplinarity is also one of the goals of the new Tampere University, which, from January 2019, joins together Tampere University of Technology, University of Tampere, and Tampere University of Applied Sciences. The new university specifically aims at creating a unique hub for interdisciplinary research on society, the economy, technology, and health. However, in research and teaching of languages, interdisciplinary approaches open not only new opportunities but also create various challenges at both global and local scales.
The ninth FINSSE conference is organised by English Studies at Tampere University, and it is open to members of the Finnish Society for the Study of English and other interested individuals. We welcome papers that approach the theme of the conference as well as other topics involving the study of English.
Possible topics include interdisciplinarity in empirical studies of English, theoretical and methodological approaches to interdisciplinarity, and recent interdisciplinary developments in linguistics, literary studies, translation studies, and language teaching.
300-word (max.) abstracts should be sent to the conference organisers by 28 February 2019 at https://www.lyyti.fi/reg/finsse9_callforpapers. Selected papers will be considered for a refereed publication. Abstracts are invited for 1) individual papers (20 min + 10 min discussion), 2) workshop/panel sessions of three papers on a specific topic, and 3) poster presentations. Submissions should include abstracts for each paper. Poster presentations are particularly recommended for graduate students.
Keynote speakers: Andreas H. Jucker (University of Zurich), Sarah Krotz (University of Alberta), and Luc van Doorslaer (University of Tartu).
Registration fee is 80 e for regular attendance and 50 e for students (early bird). On Thursday, a conference dinner (payable on registration) will be served. Graduate students, doctoral researchers, and higher education teachers of English are welcome to join FINSSE, and other researchers may also apply (see the FINSSE homepages at http://web.abo.fi/fak/hf/enge/finsse).
