Welcome to the 10th webinar of the series ‘Dialogues on education and society’! Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionise higher education. However, its implementation also poses significant challenges, such as ethical concerns, privacy issues, and the need for faculty and staff training. In this webinar, we will explore the opportunities and challenges of using AI in higher education, and discuss best practices for integrating AI into teaching, learning and research.

Speakers’ bio and abstracts

LuYuYu Lu is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Educational Technology, Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University (BNU), where he also serves as the director of the ICT centre of the Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLII).

He has published more than 70 academic papers in various journals and conferences (e.g., in IEEE TKDE, TMC, ICDM, AIED, AAAI, CIKM, EDBT, IJCAI, ICDE). Lu currently serves as the PC member for multiple international conferences (e.g., AAAI, AIED, EMNLP, ACL, IJCAI). His research interests mainly sit at the intersection field of artificial intelligence and education.

Abstract

Yu Lu will talk about the latest research and practical applications in the of artificial intelligence in the field of education (AIED), and envision the emerging topics as well as potential applications of AIED in the near future.

Anna-Mari Rusanen is a philosopher of artificial intelligence and cognitive sciences. Her research topics vary from the philosophical foundations of artificial intelligence to the cognitive dynamics of human-machine interaction, and from the ethical issues to the nature of computational explanations. Currently she works as an university lecturer in cognitive science, (Digital Humanities, University of Helsinki), and also as a senior specialist on ethical and societal aspects of AI in Ministry of Finance of Finland.

Abstract

ChatGPT can be used to summarise articles, write essays, translate text and much more, and it is expected to impact heavily on higher education. ChatGPT is a large language model  (LLM), and is probably the most famous example of the transformer-architectures. In this talk, Rusanen will analyse the properties of large language model. Further, she will discuss their impact for higher education from a multidisciplinary point of view. Especially, she will focus on the question of sufficient algorithmic literacy skills.
