A new paper out investigating online conversations on the new Finnish flagship library Oodi

A new paper published in International Journal of Cultural Policy by Riie Heikkilä and Ossi Sirkka makes sense of online conversations on the new Finnish flagship library Oodi by combining topic modeling and qualitative analysis

The brand new paper is titled “Tolerants versus traditionalists: Making sense of online conversations on the new Finnish flagship library Oodi” and it’s fully open access at the website of the journal.

In the paper, using structural topic modelling and qualitative thematic analysis, Heikkilä and Sirkka identify eight different topics in the online discussion on Oodi that appear to be highly polarized. Interpreting the conversations as negotiations of the ownership of publicly funded culture and cultural capital, they find that the negotiations are organized around two opposing poles: tolerant, cosmopolitan views versus traditional, conservative attitudes.
