Jarmo’s project is entitled “Working-class Youth and Experiences of Recognition”. It will be carried out in Tampere University with close collaboration with international partners from the United States and the United Kingdom. It continues and expands the work Jarmo has already started during his 2025-2026 visiting period in Harvard University as the Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies.
The public description of the project is as follows: “The philosophy of recognition and empirical research on experiences of recognition have developed rapidly since the beginning of the 21st century. Experiences of recognition have been found to be connected to social and political participation. This project investigates the experiences of recognition among young working-class people: how they feel recognised (or not) by politicians and the broader political structures, and how their experiences compare to those of other social groups. The project utilises thematic interviews and survey data. This research will be conducted at Tampere University. Research results will help to better understand young people’s social participation or non-participation, and the findings can be used to promote young people’s participation in the future.”
