Mikko Kyrönviita will be presenting his research on skateboarding and Do It Yourself building practices at Nottingham Trent University on Tuesday 29th of October. The presentation is part of Youth Research Group’s workshop at School of Social Sciences.
The presentation delves into skateboarders’ DIY building practices through which they change the materiality and sociality of urban spaces. The focus is on themes of everyday political action, learning, and knowledge creation as well as the ways how skateboarders’ proactivity has led to new forms of collaboration in urban governance. The research is based on the extensive research material consisting of 35 in-depth interviews with skateboarders who have been building 14 different concrete DIY skateparks in Finland.
