Workshop description
One of the core principles behind Access for All is using plain language to present information so that our audience can understand it the first time they read it. This FREE one-hour webinar will present a hands-on look at a specific plain language technique by walking participants through the basics of how different types of texts can be broken down into comic-style documents.
Come join Barbra Kingsley, the Chair of the Center for Plain Language and host of the Access for All Conference, as she introduces us to the host of this workshop, Dr. Anne Ketola, an illustrator and a post-doctoral researcher in communication research at Tampere University in Finland.
During this workshop, Dr. Ketola will:
- take us through a hands-on session that introduces how a regular (text-only) document can be converted into a comic-style document
- discuss the importance of identifying the needs of the target audience and the importance of simple design
- explain how those designs and their presented information are tested on the target audience and content experts.
- go over the challenges in comic-style design and how to overcome some of those pitfalls.
- open things up for a Q & A to discuss how these concepts can be applied directly to your line of work.
Whether you’re presenting legal, financial, technical, or medical information, using plain language helps communicate in an approachable and easy-to-understand way. This workshop will be a fascinating opportunity for plain language newbies and experts alike!
Come join us and learn how comic-style documents are helping to lead the plain language movement and making information more accessible to all.
