After several months’ preparation, video filming and edition, the preface episode of “This is Finnish Education” Video Series, the first tailor-made video on Finnish education for the Chinese audience, is going to be released to the public soon. The preface video will be first shown in China on 9th October 2017 in the events of Finnish Minster of Education and Culture’s visit to Beijing!

“This is Finnish Education” Video Series is produced by the Sino-Finnish Education Research Centre (SFERC), in cooperation with its partners and sponsors, including the City of Tampere, Tampere University of Tampere (UTA), Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Beijing Normal University and Beijing Mingyuan Institute of Education.

SFERC is jointly coordinated by the University of Tampere and Beijing  Normal University, which is also one of the six centres of the Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (Jolli). Jolli is a key network platform under the framework of the “Sino-Finnish Learning Garden”, a framework for education exchange and cooperation between China and Finland initiated by both governments. By now Jolli members cover over 20 universities from both countries.

This Video Series, “This is Finnish Education” Video Series, is an innovative way to present the research initiated and implemented by the SFERC. The whole Video Series aims to interpret Finnish education thematically from the perspective of Finnish-Chinese cooperation, and discuss the heated educational topics in both Finland and China. Through the ‘This is Finnish Education’ Video Series, SFERC tries to connect to promote the advanced educational concepts and experiences of Finnish education into China, and to facilitate the development of educational export from Finland to Chinese market.  Meanwhile, SFERC also hopes to translate Finnish experiences to the practice and reforms in Chinese education system.

It particularly addresses the puzzles faced by Chinese stakeholders in the area of education who are interested in learning Finnish experiences, such as:

  • With no doubt that the excellence of Finnish education should be appreciated, but how much is it relevant to the Chinese education reforms, particularly considering the contextual differences between the two countries?
  • While the PISA results have indicated the success of Finnish basic education, are there some special merits of other level sectors of education (i.e. universities, universities of applied sciences and vocational schools)?
  • Although Finnish education has been a role model for the world, a new round of educational reforms has been launched. What are the new changes in the reform? How can China learn from this?

The Video Series is produced based on abundant filming of classrooms and school life in Finnish education institutions as well as interviews of principals, teachers, students and experts from both China and Finland The Video Series has dual subtitles (both Finnish/English and Chinese) and Chinese narratives to address the needs of the audience.
