Supporting the long-term career development of its Fellows lies at the core of the strategy and activities of the Tampere IAS. A significant tool in this is the Tampere IAS Mentoring Programme.
At the Tampere IAS, each Research Fellow is supported by a handpicked mentor. The mentors are experienced colleagues coming from Tampere University or elsewhere who commit their input solely to the advancement of their mentees. The approach of the Tampere IAS to mentoring has been developed in its Mentoring Pilot Programme in 2021-2023.
Both the mentors and the mentees are supported by training and related material, including a Mentoring Handbook. The regularly updated Handbook has been developed primarily with early and mid-career academics in mind, but it contains ideas that can inspire mentors and mentees in other contexts as well. The Handbook is available on the Tampere IAS website for any interested parties according to the Creative Commons BY-SA license rules.

Tampere Institute for Advanced Study Mentoring Handbook. Version 2.0 (Boden, Rebecca & Teperi, Juha, 2024) has now been published in Trepo, the Open Repository of Tampere University:

This Handbook is a practical guide to mentoring. It does not tell you exactly what to do and how to do it. Rather, it is like a (travel) guidebook: you use it to acquaint yourself with general ideas and concepts, and then pick the pieces that you think serve you best. Mentoring requires mutual consent and collaboration – this Handbook is merely a resource for colleagues to use as they together think best – or not at all. We hope you find it useful.
