The article “The Integrated Sensing and Communication Revolution for 6G: Vision, Techniques, and Applications” has been selected for Inside Proceedings of the IEEE: 2025 Highlights and What’s Next, which showcases the year’s most visible and cited IEEE publications. The list includes highly influential research across fields from artificial intelligence and edge computing to 6G wireless networks.

Arne Fischer-Bühner: Specialised neural networks could enable a greener mobile connectivity

Mobile networks are everywhere—but they are also energy-hungry. In his doctoral dissertation, Dipl.-Ing. Arne Fischer-Bühner explores how neural networks can help to reduce the energy footprint of signal transmission in our mobile communication systems. His research combines wireless communications and machine learning to tackle a fundamental problem: How to efficiently amplify radio signals without distortion.

Maija Mäkelä: New cooperative positioning methods enable localization in the absence of satellite signals

Satellite-based positioning cannot be taken for granted anymore – how to locate rescuers when signals vanish? M.Sc. (Tech.) Maija Mäkelä demonstrates in her dissertation novel cooperative positioning methods, that combine sensor information and distance measurements. This results in a satellite-independent positioning solution, which enables tracking of teams of pedestrians also under challenging conditions.

Rabia Qadar: Improving interpretation of underwater environments via strategic communication and machine learning

Maritime communication depends on continuous and dependable networks of submarines, underwater drones, and sensors for deep-sea investigations, long-duration underwater surveillance, detecting hazards, and strengthening naval security. For these applications, robust communication systems are critical to enriching real-time decision-making and coordination, preventing potential environmental disasters, and safeguarding the infrastructure. In her doctoral dissertation, M.Sc. Rabia Qadar explored strategic and adaptive approaches to communication between underwater sensors. Her novel underwater communication framework improves reliability, availability and speed of communication while preserving the energy resources of underwater devices.

Roman Klus: Revolutionizing location-awareness in wireless networks with deep learning

For his doctoral dissertation, M.Sc. Roman Klus introduced a number of deep learning models to improve the localization and location-awareness capabilities within the current and future wireless networks, while focusing on challenges such as non-line-of-sight, network uncertainty, or data scarcity. The proposed solutions ensure localization accuracy and reliability, as well as support other network functions relying on knowledge of the user position, for example mobility management.

Natalia Yarkina: Advancing the understanding of critical technologies driving 5G network evolution

The 5G specifications serve as a foundation for developing mobile networks into an omnipresent and versatile communication infrastructure. Beyond quantitative improvements in speed, latency, and coverage, the standards introduce a major shift toward unprecedented flexibility in supported services, business models, network design and control. In her dissertation, Lic. Natalia Yarkina investigated key enabling technologies — network slicing, integrated access and backhaul (IAB), and broadcast/multicast communications — that make this shift possible.

Vesa Lampu: Digital self-interference cancellation methods pave way for better wireless networks

For his doctoral dissertation, M.Sc. (Tech) Vesa Lampu developed various digital methods for cancelling self-interference from the received signals in wireless communication devices. Such methods improve the overall capacity of systems, which simultaneously transmit and receive data, since the self-interference can be much higher in power than the proper signals from other devices.

Professor Heidi Kuusniemi, specialised in geospatial technology and satellite navigation, joins Tampere University

Heidi Kuusniemi will start as a Professor of Wireless Systems at Tampere University on 1 August 2025. Before taking on this position, she served as a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Vaasa, leading the research on geospatial technology and satellite positioning, also acting as the coordinating Professor for Digital Economy, a multi-disciplinary research platform. She has also worked as a part-time Research Professor in satellite navigation at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute of the National Land Survey of Finland. Kuusniemi brings with her strong expertise in satellite positioning, interference mitigation and smart wireless systems.
