Bo Sun: From connectivity to awareness: Enabling sub‑meter to sub‑centimeter positioning with 5G/6G networks

In his doctoral dissertation, Bo Sun studied how future mobile networks (5G and beyond) can be used not only for communication but also for precise positioning and environmental sensing. The research shows that standard 5G signals can achieve sub-meter positioning and even create maps of surroundings, while new techniques using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces can improve accuracy to centimeter or sub-centimeter levels. These results are important because they allow reliable positioning in places where GPS does not work, such as indoors or in dense urban areas. The findings can benefit industries such as transportation, manufacturing, and public safety by enabling autonomous systems, smarter infrastructure, and cost-efficient monitoring using existing mobile networks.

Jaakko Pihlajasalo: Machine learning improves tolerance to impairments and distortions of satellite orbit predictions and 5G receivers

The doctoral dissertation of M.Sc. (Tech) Jaakko Pihlajasalo in the field of applied mathematics titled Impairment Mitigation with Machine Learning for Satellite Ephemeris Extension and 5G Physical-Layer Communications will be publicly examined at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University on 20 March 2026.

Arne Fischer-Bühner: Specialised neural networks could enable a greener mobile connectivity

Mobile networks are everywhere—but they are also energy-hungry. In his doctoral dissertation, Dipl.-Ing. Arne Fischer-Bühner explores how neural networks can help to reduce the energy footprint of signal transmission in our mobile communication systems. His research combines wireless communications and machine learning to tackle a fundamental problem: How to efficiently amplify radio signals without distortion.
