Reliability levels

Since the 1960 s and 1970 s, the prestressing steel used on post-tensioned concrete (PTC) bridges has been known to be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This can result in brittle rupture of the prestressing steel. In overall the crack before failure behaviour is beneficial for robustness of structure to gain possible visual observation of approaching failure and reduction of stiffness, which allows redistribution of bending moments.

The development of analysis methods for bearing capacity assessment of susceptible structures is important to verify the adequate safety level of structure. The assessment of relation between design variables of structures and robustness of structure gives background for development of tools for management of bearing capacity assessment needs for existing bridge stock.

New paper Redundancy and reliability levels of post-tensioned and grouted concrete cross-section in case of tendon failure by Olli Asp and Anssi Laaksonen is published in Bridge Structures.
