Next Media Transforming the Media Experience

Production and consumption of media is under radical transformation. Digitalization of production, distribution and consumption of media as well as the growing penetration of broadband access and mobile Internet allow increasingly rich media content to be distributed to a variety of terminals. This endeavour takes advantage of the current transition towards co-creation, interactivity and independency of time and place. The diversity of terminals and devices in consumers’ everyday life is increasing and the significance of mobility is emphasized.

The Next Media research programme (2010-2013) aims at innovations which by means of new business models, concepts and technology, meet people’s insatiable need for engaging and activating media experiences.

The company lead programme consists of four work packages which are responsible of the research and development in their respective research themes. Research themes cover all aspects of the media production, from media content access to working processes and to business models as well as user experience. All major Finnish research organizations participate in the research work.

The central research themes are:

Business models, concepts and organizational development

Social interaction, co creativity and user experience

Profiling, context awareness and content adaptation

Media content access, production processes and tools
