Several Dynamics group's presentations held at 'Sosiologipäivät' 2023

The annual conference of the Westermarck Society, or 'Sosiologipäivät', was successfully held onsite in Tampere 23-24 March 2023 after the break of a couple of years caused by the pandemic (in 2020, the conference was cancelled and both in 2021 and 2022 it was held online). The Tampere Group for Sociology of Culture actively participated in the conference.

At ‘Sosiologipäivät’ 2023, Sara Sivonen and Riie Heikkilä organized the already traditional working group ‘Culture and Consumption’, which gathered together scholars delivering papers and engaging in discussions over two fully-booked sessions. Among the paper presentations, also the members of the Tampere Group for Sociology of Culture were nicely represented with the following three presentations, each related to one ongoing research project among the Group:

Mikael Wallin: Työväenluokkaisuuden merkitykset suomenkielisessä Twitterissä ja Suomi24-
foorumilla. — Mikael’s presentation dealt with the question of what kind of meanings are attached to the notions of ‘working class’ and ‘working-class culture’ in the Finnish online discussion and, thereby, it was part of the recently started CuWoC project.

Riie Heikkilä: Kulttuuripääoman uusjako algoritmien aikakaudella: vertaileva tutkimus
suomalaisista kirjastoista. — This presentation, part of Riie’s PUBLIB project, delivered first results based on expert interviews and observations in the Finnish libraries, discussing the changing role of public library as the key institution in the distribution of cultural capital.

Ossi Sirkka ja Semi Purhonen: Merkitystason kulttuurinen stratifikaatio: rakenteellinen
aihemallinnus kulttuurin käsitteen erilaisista ymmärryksistä yhdeksässä Euroopan maassa. — The presentation by Ossi and Semi summarized the cross-national comparative work done in INVENT project to examine, through analyzing an open-ended question of representative survey data collected in nine countries, how ordinary Europeans’ understand the concept of culture.

All three papers were presented in the first session of the working group ‘Culture and Consumption’ on Thursday 23 March.
