Digital Olfaction and Electronic Nose Technologies

Our research group develops technologies for the generation, delivery, sensing, transmission, and analysis of odors in digital environments. By combining olfactometry, chemical sensing, machine learning, human perception studies, and interactive technologies, we create systems that enable digital representation and communication of smell. Developed in collaboration with experts in human-computer interaction, machine learning, sensing technologies, and olfactory science, these technologies support applications ranging from virtual and augmented reality to sensory testing, electronic noses, and digital chemical communication.

Olfactory Display and Human Perception Technologies

  • Automated olfactory threshold testing system (Surakka et al., 2025)
  • Integration of olfactory displays into virtual reality environments (Rantala et al., 2024)
  • Technologies for transferring scents over communication networks (Isokoski et al., 2020)
  • Compact olfactometer for controlled odor presentation and perception testing (Nieminen et al., 2018)
  • Olfactory display prototype for presenting and sensing authentic and synthetic odors (Salminen et al., 2018)

Electronic Nose Technologies
