About me
George Kurian trained in peace mediation after nearly twenty years as a journalist and filmmaker on the front lines of war, conflict, social unrest, mass movements and freedom struggles. He lived in Afghanistan and the Middle East and travelled repeatedly to cover situations in Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Yemen, Palestine, Israel, India, Nepal, Srilanka, Somalia, Central African Republic, Rwanda, and Malawi.
From parliaments and corporate board rooms in capital cities to grass roots activism in remote villages, the opportunities to engage with state and non-state actors – combatants, ideologues, warlords, politicians, bureaucrats, diplomats as well as child soldiers, refugees, victims and aid workers helped him develop a visceral understanding of the contexts leading to conflicts.
Documenting health, education, infant & maternal health, climate change challenges, etc., faced by people in conflict zones and the global south against the backdrop of historic, cultural and geopolitical contexts and the lived experiences of people underscored for him the point the global interconnectedness of conflicts, especially those considered to be local, ethnic, etc.
Based in Oslo, he teaches film at Oslo Met university, and conducts workshops and masterclasses.
