The aim of NARS is to renew nationalism research in the humanities by studying nationalism from the edges, which means focusing on the processes of nationalism among non-elite populations, minorities, and children; in geographically outlying areas and transnational spaces; and with a particular focus on nationalism’s implicit manifestations and everyday nationalism. The CoE is a collaboration of four research institutions: Finnish Literature Society (PI: Ville Kivimäki, also the leader of the whole CoE), Tampere University (PI: Tanja Vahtikari), University of Helsinki (PI: Ulla Savolainen) and Åbo Akademi University (PI: Ann-Catrin Östman). Tanja Vahtikari is the current leader of the “Lived nation” team at HEX, Ville Kivimäki its former leader (2018–2023). HEX congratulates the new Centre of Excellence!
