New research article on emissions reporting in logistics and its development published

The research article "Development of logistics emissions reporting – Shippers' and logistics service providers' perspective", was published in November 2025 in the journal Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment.

The paper studied shippers’ and logistics service providers’ (LSPs’) current views, experiences, and challenges related to the development and demand for emissions data and reporting in Finland. The aim of the study was to understand and identify the different institutional pressures faced by LSPs and shippers, and thereby to suggest practical measures to advance logistics emissions reporting. To achieve the aim, 17 expert interviews were conducted. The interviewees included LSPs, shippers, and other experts in the field.

Interest in emissions reporting has clearly increased in recent years in companies. The pressure to report, experienced by both LPSs and shippers, stems from various sustainability and emissions reduction requirements, regulations, and customer demands, suggesting that interest in emissions reporting will continue to grow. However, companies are currently at very different stages of development, and reporting practices vary.

Logistics emissions reporting can be developed by strengthening the growing interest in emissions data and reporting through regulations, standardized methods, clear common targets, and digital development. Addressing the lack of expertise and resources related to emissions issues within companies is the most significant way to promote emissions reporting. The desired target state supports development and ideally, logistics emissions reporting would be unified, transparent, and automated.

The data collection for this study was funded by the LOLIPOP project (VN/31379/2022), supported by the Finnish Government.
