Exhibition: 'Modern' Mothering, Childhood and Child Healthcare: Gendered & Scientised Ideas, Material Culture & Experiences

Tampere University, Main Building, Ground floor (Cafe Alakuppila) 1-15 December 2025
Kalevantie 4
33100 Tampere
EXHIBITION OPENING: 1 December at 1PM (Cafe Alakuppila)

Connecting and comparing our histories to make sense of our present is often not an easy task. The exhibition on ‘Modern’ Mothering, Childhood & Child Healthcare presents a unique opportunity to be adventurous and do exactly this.

Using gender and science as its main anchors, this poster exhibition draws on local, regional, national and transnational cross-cultural tensions, connections and comparisons of ‘modern’ and ‘scientific’ mothering, childhood and childcare advice and experiences.

From the doctoral and postdoctoral to the professorial levels, we will exhibit illustrated posters related to our research from diverse disciplines primarily: Archeology, European and World History, Cultural History, Comparative Literature, Gender Studies, History of Experiences, History of Emotions, and Social History of Medicine.

Our main goal here is to be committed to spreading the message of the importance of gender equality and the decolonial imperatives of our times through an exploration of our pasts.

This exhibition is being organised under the aegis of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Research Council of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX), Tampere University; Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS), University of Turku; and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) COFUND TIES Fellowship.

The Research Exhibition is being organised by Dr. Ranjana Saha (TIAS) with Dr. Tanja Vahtikari, Dr. Stephanie Olsen, Prof. Pirjo Markkola and Dr. Mikko Kemppainen Research Council of Finland’s Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX).
