BioReno was launched on April 1, 2025

In the BioReno project, high-performance bio-based materials and hybrid structural solutions with low environmental impact for renovation are developed and researched.

BioReno project was launched in April 2025. The project studies the use of bio-based building materials with a low carbon footprint in additional insulation solutions for renovation projects. BioReno is the first large-scale project in this field in Finland. The study covers all stages of the construction process and the related requirements. Both building materials and structural solutions are studied. BioReno is carried out in cooperation with the participating companies and the research organisations.

The domestic and global market potential of renovation is expected to develop, with a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, as consumers become more environmentally conscious and regulatory requirements become stricter. Therefore, new innovations in materials and construction technology also play a significant role in shaping the future of renovation. The solutions developed in BioReno offer new business opportunities for the companies involved in this rapidly growing market area.

The total funding of the BioReno project is EUR 2.05 million, and the research is funded by Business Finland, 20 construction companies and the research organisations. The research organisations in the project are Tampere University (TAU), the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) and the Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd (VTT). The building physics research group at Tampere University is the coordinator of the project. The current schedule of the study is from April 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027.
