The award for moisture-safe construction was awarded to the RIL 107 Building’s water and damp proofing guidelines

The winners of the moisture-safe construction competition.

The award for moisture-safe construction was awarded to RIL 107 Building’s water and damp proofing guidelines at the Building Physics seminar in Tampere on 25 October 2023. A total of six competition finalists were heard at the event.

The award for moisture-safe construction, awarded for the sixth time, aims to highlight the key role of moisture control during construction and the moisture technical functionality of structures in the implementation of a safe, healthy and long-lasting building. The aim of the competition is to highlight good practices, implementation methods and products that aim to improve the moisture safety of buildings. The competition applies to both new construction and renovation.

A total of six competition finalists were heard at the Building Physics seminar on 25 October 2023, and the prize was awarded to RIL 107 Building’s water and damp proofing guidelines, which has been written and updated by:

  • Pekka Talaskivi, RIL
  • Pekka Laamanen, AFRY Building Physics
  • Ismo Heimonen, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd
  • Tommi Mutanen, Sweco Finland Oy
  • Lasse Rajala, Katepal Oy and the Finnish Roofing Association
  • Antti Souto, AINS Group Suunnittelu Oy
  • Timo Turunen, Ramboll Finland Oy
  • Juha Vinha, Tampere University, Building Physics

Justification for the award

RIL 107 Building’s water and damp proofing guidelines have a long tradition and it is the most comprehensive and respected practical guideline guiding the design of building physics for entire buildings in Finland.

“This update of the guidelines has been particularly challenging, as it has had to take into account the increasing moisture stress caused by climate change on structures more than before, and at the same time, the aim has been to steer the construction industry towards the use of more fault-tolerant and long-term structural solutions. The new guidelines are a very important tool in the design and implementation of moisture-safe structures, which is why they also deserve to win this year’s Moisture-Safe Construction competition,” says Professor Juha Vinha.

“The entire legislation and its decrees have changed completely in ten years. In particular, the stricter regulations concerned humidity control and energy regulations. The most important reason for rewarding RIL 107 is that the guide does not only address mistakes, but also proactively tries to prevent the emergence of new ones. We appreciate the book’s strongly forward-looking perspective,” says Managing Editor Seppo Mölsä.
